Stockholm 2009

I will be returning to Stockholm once again in June to coincide with Gerald's birthday.  I've already been in touch with my Stockholm friends and former colleagues of Gerald with a view to getting together while I'm over there at a special venue, still to be arranged.  Watch this space for further information/updates!

Gerald in "The Rifleman"

I'm delighted to say that I've made contact with Margie, who runs "The Rifleman" fan website.  Gerald appeared in the episode "Squeeze Play".  Margie has very kindly allowed me to add a biographical note on Gerald's career, which I've called "Hero and Villain".  Go to my Web Links page, the second page and follow "The Rifleman" links.

A Star for Gerald

I am still writing to people to try to encourage them into enthusiasm for awarding Gerald a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame under the Radio category.  I have repeatedly written to CBS Radio but so far have not been graced with a single reply.  If, gentle reader, you feel that you can assist in the Star for Gerald campaign, please contact me at lindacwood@geraldmohr.biz with you suggestions!  Gerald so deserves a posthumous Star for all the wonderful work he did for CBS Radio during the 1940s and early 50s, especially with Philip Marlowe and The Whistler series, that his efforts should not go unrecognised by the Industry!

Ten Tall Men comic

A Canadian correspondent has sent me a copy of a comic version of Gerald's film "Ten Tall Men".  The story follows the film closely, if somewhat abbreviated.  However, the artist's impression of Gerald's character, which is written in the comic as Caid Hussin, is somewhat at variance with the actual appearance of the actor, unfortunately.  Thanks, M, for sending me the copy.

Gerald's Voice Talent

Gerald's voice talent was a major asset to him.  He narrated, appeared or starred in over 500 radio shows from the mid 1930s to late 1950s, mostly for CBS Radio.  His influence in the radio industry of the time was considerable.  He also, at the start of his career, was a cub reporter and later he also made Public Service Announcements during the Second World War while serving in the American Air Force.  In my humble opinion Gerald had the perfect male American voice - perfect pitch, perfect timbre and perfect diction.  He could do anything with his voice - he could speak like a young or old man, with a rough or cultured accent.  He also had particular talent in accents, specialising in Mexican, mid-European and French.  He brought these voice talents over to film and television characterisations, too.  He was voice-over for cartoon characters and was the voice of the original Mr Fantastic, Reed Richards, in The Fantastic Four.  Please note that the character resembles Gerald with silver hair at the temples!  And, oh yes, he was the voice of Ronny the Dog in the excellent 7-minute cartoon "Flora" (1949).

For the amount of work and commitment Gerald put into his 500+ radio performances, he should certainly be awarded a posthumous Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame under the Radio category.  No-one deserves it more.  Please, gentle reader, let me know if you agree!

Gerald's talent

Gerald's style of acting was unique.  He could play hero or villain with equal skill and enhanced his characters with little gestures and facial expressions that were there and gone in an instant, making the viewer think - did he really wink?  (Bonanza, "The Abduction") Did he really smile at another actor's character despite his face being nearly completely turned away from camera?  ("Raiders of the Seven Seas")  Did he really wrinkle his nose? (Bronco, "The Invaders").  And then you see him actually enjoying his role, having fun with it.  Prime example of this is his "Lost in Space" episode!  And he always had fun playing baddies, and especially bad guys who were really nice guys in disguise (Maverick "Escape to Tampico", the movie "The Blonde Bandit").  I can't think of any other actor, living or dead, who could match Gerald's acting skill.  Can you?
